We all have dreams. Dreams for ourselves, dreams for our lives and even dreams for our world. Often we get so caught up in working to achieve our dreams, we may ignore the dreams of others. We may even view other´s dreams as competition for our dreams.
This morning we joined Methodists from different churches in Brazil at the Fortaleza Central Methodist Church. During the service, we each were asked to write one of our dreams on a small sheet of paper, fold it and place it in a purple balloon. We blew up our balloon and then we threw them all into the air. The job of each person in the church was to not let any of the balloons touch the ground. We were all working together to lift up these dreams and keep them alive.
My favorite thing about this activity was the fact you couldn´t just focus on your dream and just keep that one balloon a float. Your dream´s success was dependent on others and their dreams were dependent on you. If you decided to not really try and a balloon landed on the floor, there was no way to know if that was your dream or someone else´s.
After the activity was over, we popped the balloons, read the wish inside (with the help of our amazing translators!) and kept it to remember this dream (and the dreamer) in our prayers. I will be continuing to lift up this dream just as someone else in the church today will be lifting up my dream.
Achieving my dream is important to me but it is even more amazing to lift up my dreams and work toward it as I am helping others achieve their dream. This is not a competition with only one winner but a joint effort where together we can all succeed. When we see someone´s balloon - their dream - almost touching the ground, we can work together to keep it up and going. When our dream seems to be sinking is when we need other´s the very most to lift it up and keep it soaring.
